Who knew?!

As I continue to purge old magazines and long-ago-saved articles that have been filed away for 5 years, I came across some information of GREAT worth. And I, practicing my "please just share" parental philosophy, am posting it for you.
"Hand-me-down car seats more than six years old should be avoided, even if you're sure that the seat was handled gently. Plastic explands when it's hot and contracts when it's cold," explains Angela Mickalide (program director for the National Safe Kids Campaign in D.C). "Over time, it deteriorates."

WHAT? Even though I have three children, I had NEVER heard this! And I would have continued to live in my oblivious fog had I not saved this article years ago....AND then actually READ it last night, for the first time, before throwing it away.

Anyway, I wanted to pass this along just in case you, too, weren't aware of this little piece of vital information. You know, considering this piece of plastic is what we are trusting will save our children's lives.

Well, not that we use carseats, as seen in the above picture. But, you know, just in case... ;)

Obviously I'm kidding. But I don't like doing posts without pictures, so... Here's one of Selah when she was little. We were at a Safari park, feeding large animals that would stick their head in the window and demand food from your bucket. We figured she was a whole lot safer on our lap then strapped into a seat away from us...all at the mercy of a hungry animal tongue. :)

I'm sure hanging out the window holding a lollipop was a great way to attract the animals--and see their tongues UP CLOSE! Very safe! :)

Whew, I'm sure glad the hand-me-down car seat for our baby is only 5 and 1/2 years old, not 6. Must be lots safer. :)

Davene, you're such a goob. *laughing* Yes, I admit it. Selah was the bait. We wanted to make sure that ALL the large, hungry animals didn't pass by our car. *lollipop anyone?*

*still laughing*

I do slightly remember reading something about this when my older two were little...thankfully we are pretty much done with car seats (except the booster my youngest is in)...unless we adopt then who knows...it could be back to car seats!

Well, I need to talk to Dave today. We better get going on #2 cause I guess we'll have to have all the kids we want within that 6 year span cause I'm not forking over another small fortune for a car seat. haha.

what if your kid is six? seriously - i am not buying a new car seat (that sounds harsh doesn't it?) when the child is going to be in it still for a bit more time since Virginia just changed their laws. it's a racket it is...they read the research, bought stock in the people that sell car seats and then....changed all the laws so your kids have to be in them for 8 years!!! It's a conspiracy...hee hee...
