No, this picture wasn't posed. Selah, for whatever reason, ran over to Charis, put her arm around her, and started to talk. Thankfully I had my handy-dandy camera near by to catch the moment. These are the times that I am SO thankful that we were able to have them as close as they are in age (21 months)! It definitely makes for a more entertaining homeschool environment!
Speaking of, we've been doing school for a few weeks now. But this week brought some changes to our system...and our the look of our home.
The first being a World Map. Cut to size, lamented and attached to our dining room table. The girls love it! Especially Charis, who loves to read the different places to us throughout the day. (My dad is a middle school teacher, so we get blessed by his hand-me-downs quite frequently. Thanks, Dad!)
After seeing the dining room in all it's map-covered glory, Jet got motivated as well. He suggested that we do a weekly family project of sorts. One where we choose a country...and talk about its different aspects throughout the week. Sounds incredibly cool to me. And who knows? Maybe I'll get daring and try to fix a dinner to match the particular country's cuisine. Um. Okay, so maybe not. But it sounded good, eh?
Already I can see how the girls' understanding of maps and states and countries and oceans has improved. Can't ask for more than that. And if I'm really being honest, my geography skills stink. So I'm fully prepared to learn along with them!
And Hallelujah! I found something that apparently motivates Charis to work on her math, again and again and again. :) AND I can already see an improvement in her grasping these concepts as well....
...Apparently all it took were a few key items to get the "school spirit" going!
So there you have it. Even though we don't have a "school room" set aside. We do have an "educationally minded" house. Can't ask for more than that.

Good for you! I love the map...am looking forward to getting one of our own to put somewhere prominent in the house. For now, we use a globe in Josiah's room and USA map placemats on the table.
Great point about the whole house being focused on education...that's what it's all about anyway. You're an amazing mom and teacher!
Forgot to ask...which country are you choosing to focus on first???
Nice job!
I love the idea of having two kids close in age. I guess because I benefitted so much from it myself. I would like to have a brother or sister for Haven before he's 2 also. We shall see ... (:
An educationally minded house
There's nothing better. We don't have a school room either. School happens everywhere.
I love the white board. I think my two younger girls would love to do their math on that. Now is the map attached to the table or just laminated and laying on the table?
Kate
Kate- the map is "laminated" with contact paper, and then partially attached on the corners with contact paper left-overs so little fingers can't pry it off as easily. ;)
The white board came from Costco. I'm pretty sure it was under $15. included 4 dry erase markers, an eraser, spray cleaner, and a BUNCH of magnetic "thingies". Great deal for anyone interested!
