Ah...Barbies

Every little girl's dream doll, right?

I remember going through my phase of Barbie. Dressing her up. Fixing her hair. Accessorizing her to the Nth degree.

I remember going through a store, which has since gone out of business (over 15 years ago!) and pointing out the Barbie doll that I wanted for my next birthday. I remember the choice seemed overwhelming, as they had just come out with all the different "types" of Barbies. Skipper. Beach time Barbie. Rockstar Barbie. ...PLUS, all those cool, new clothes and accessories galore.

It was great. Do you remember the phase?

Well for years, I kept those Barbies. Hidden away in a box. Until last week.

I dragged them down from the attic so my girls could play with something new. Though I'm starting to question the wisdom of my retrieval of yesteryear's toys...

Can you see why? Look a little harder...

Or maybe the next picture will help put things into...uh, perspective. Charis turned to her side on her own volition, while I pulled off an award-winning poker-face.

Yep. That's my five year-old Double-D-Cup little girl. Only 30 minutes with these dolls and this is what she has become. A Hoot*ers wanna-be. Dear Lord, help.

Bu-bye, Barbies. Hello Cabbage Patch kids. Thankfully, I have THOSE stored up in the attic as well.

Ummm..yep. THAT is precisely why we chose not to buy Barbies for our girls (despite their desperate pleas) and instead opted for the Only Hearts Club dolls - who don't have the prominent features your daughter chose to model for you. :)

Those pictures are soooooo going to come back to haunt that child years from now. :)

Seriously?! She came up with that on her own? (Not that I can picture you stuffing your 5 year olds shirt!) Wow, the Evil of Barbie's. Why did OUR parents let us play with those things? tsk tsk. I'm all for Cabbage Patch kids. I have a dozen in the attic just waiting for my children to love on them. We need a few more girls. ;)

Yeah, my parents didn't allow us to have Barbie's. Can you say ultra-conservative? :)

That is TOO funny!

I LOVED Barbies! Audrey just got her first one for her 2nd birthday. She doesn't seem too interested in it though. And I, too, have some of my favorites stored in the basement for a later day of sharing.

oh, the power of Barbie- those pics were fabulous! My daughter played with her, but I couldn't help myself and gave her the talk about how Barbie was not shaped as normal women are and if she was real life, she would bent over at the waist as she would not be able to support her chest. Poor kid. I never had Barbie as a child as my mom thought it would promote poor self esteem. I can struggle with body image, so I don't think that it necessarily makes that much difference in the end. That is my say on the Barbie issue. Have a good day.

That is too funny! For some reason, we just never encounter these kinds of situations around our house, so when I see it in yours, it always catches me off guard and completely cracks me up!!! :)

I was never allowed to have Barbies as a girl, and was jealous of the girls--like you--that got to have them! :)

Barbie IS every girl's dream doll. No matter damage she may do.

OK...I SO didn't mean for this to become a blog about the validity of girls playing with Barbies and the effect it plays on their teenage/adult self confidence. Truly, not writing a dissertation for my Psych Masters or anything. *laughing*

I played with them. And I'm thinking I turned out fairly normal, with a healthy sense of confidence. *wink*

I just don't want my FIVE year old thinking she's got to be sporting the hour-glass figure. Now maybe when she's seven...then she can consider it.

HA! kidding.

Seriously, I don't think the dolls are from Hell itself. I was just completely shocked that 30 minutes playing with them brought about such a "blossoming" change in her.

That's all I'm saying ya'll.

That is absolutely hysterical. My daughter has never done that...what a hoot. No pun intended! May be time for the Only Hearts Club kids... My daughter has both and makes the Barbies their mothers at times. She has been playing with Barbies for years and does not seem phased. She is pretty conservative and we talk about being modest, et al. I don't think she is scarred for life... : )
