Growing up, my family had the wonderful tradition of Christmas tree hunting. My older brother and I would make bets on who would be the one to find that year's tree. Oh, the memories!!
But two years ago, my husband and I decided to nix that tradition...as lovely as it is...in lu of practicality. Where we took our family on a little jaunt to the Lowe's Christmas tree farm. In search of a tree of the boxed variety. The pre-lit boxed variety.
Uh-huh. An easy-to-assemble...one price...not-effected-by-drought Christmas tree. Sa-weet.
Except
Last year...right before we boxed up the green beastie...a few of the pre-lit limbs went dark. What? This was not part of the packaged Christmas we bought into!! No sir-ree! So we called up the help-line number. Busy. For an hour straight. Apparently a lot of other practical tree-loving people were not happy with the boxed spruce variety.
So, us, in all of our procrastination glory, decided to take care of it "next year". Funny how fast "next year" comes around, eh? So ...for the past few days, we've been dealing with the beast of not-so-pre-lit lights.
...Allow me to set the stage for you. Our house is cozy. I've been decorating all day. Christmas cheer is spread all around me. Carols play softly in the background. How quaint. When suddenly, my dear husband breaks the reverie and yells from the other room
Jet: "It's no wonder that Christmas trees are of a pagan tradition."
Me: Why?
Jet: "Christmas lights make me want to swear."
Huh. Now doesn't that just ooze of the Christmas spirit...joy, peace, expletives, and all that. ;) That man makes me laugh...

That is funny! Although if I was being really honest...just about every holiday makes me want to swear! I always take on too much no matter how little my task is. Just getting all my girls clean, dressed and "hair pretties assembled" makes it an ordeal "out of the ordinary".
Actually come to think of it...I could probably find something every day to swear about(away from the kids of course!)
:) too funny
as we were testing all our lights and bulbs kept burning out, and putting lights on our tree took over an hour, i was thinking how nice a pre-lit tree would be this year....i see that all trees have their problems....:)
hope yall get it lit :)
This is too funny. I did this too... bought a pre-lit tree. The very next year I found myself cutting all of the lights off of it because the darn thing wouldn't work.... and this was one of the more expensive ones from target. Not fun, I can tell you. But, I have the tree still and it gets the job done, even though I'm the one putting the lights on it each year.... well actually that would be my husband. ;)
Oh boy! We bought the same tree variety you speak of last year. It was great! LOVED it. Didn't even make me feel out of the Christmas spirit like I thought it might. Now I am worried about what might happen when we set it up this year!:)Hopefully all the lights are in great working order or I may be tempted to nix the entire thing!! Good luck hope your tree lights soon!!
Thanks for sharing a laugh!
I've always heard that you can tell the true measure of a man by two things: how he handles lost luggage after a flight...and how he handles Christmas tree lights!
I guess the fact that Jet only confessed that he felt like swearing, but didn't actually do it, makes him stand out from the crowd!!! :)
Makes me laugh, too! :)
Maybe it's time to head back out to the Christmas tree farm? [We do it every year, so I'm quite biased!]

What??? Men are supposed to handle the Christmas tree lights? I've been deceived!!! ;-) Well, considering that this year I won't be able to actually reach the tree without piercing my tummy with pine needles, maybe my hubby will give in & help me out. And hopefully there will be no swearing. :)
This sounds like a conversation you would hear at our house - with a real tree and lights.
I didn't ever have a tree growing up - they're pagan ya know? :) So now, our family hits the tree farm. I really relish the season....and LOVE my REAL tree! (for now)
That husband of yours cracks me up!
Your unlit prelit tree is exactly why we went straight for the unlit fakies from the get go. I like LOTS of lights on my tree anyway, they would never box one with as many lights as I would want.
So did you get everything lit or is it time to replace the tree with a nativity set?
Fake trees are great. Also, I think many families include explitives as part of their holiday traditions. (:
that even got a laugh out of Rick. :) hee hee...and all our lights are WORKING!!
for now...
