I was surprised when other people said that they knew about the garlic oil and breastmilk squirt-fest remedies. Here I thought I ran in Circles of Brilliance. But apparently other people are enlightened as well. Shocking.
In fact, when I read that JavaMamma and CampGirdwood knew about said remedies and didn't have them highlighted in purple on their websites for all to benefit from, I was a little taken-a-back. WHAT? They knew how to help my daughter's ears without paying an arm-and-a-leg for antibiotics? And they DIDN'T tell me?!! The nerve of it all. *grin/wink*
But then I remember that my own informative little blog site didn't have the eye infection remedy posted for all to see either. Opps.
Obviously I'm kidding. We ALL have stored away different nuggets of information, but just don't think to share them. So here's the deal. I'm going to write down all the random tips that I can currently think of (the ones that I've tried and know work). And I'm asking you to do the same. In "Comments" share all the random bits of information that would benefit other ladies. We'll share our brilliance.
I know most of you just read and don't comment. And that's completely fine. But if you do have any jewels of brilliance to share...please do!
And Crystal. I expect you to add the thing you told me about the yeast infection. (she's a midwife in training, who gets to hang out with all sorts of people with a wealth of natural healing remedies). She's who I call when anything happens in my life. And the one that told me about the breastmilk in the eye trick.
Pregnancy Nausea? Take 1/2 Unisom and B12 (my nurse told me this one. and I had HORRIBLE sickness with the first pregnancies)
Infant diaper rash and raw skin due to diarrhea? Use Aquafor and Maalox directly on skin. the Maalox balances out the acidic PH of diarrhea and the Aquafor seals the medicine to the skin. The rash clears up within a day.
Stains that won't come out of clothes and no StainStick? Dawn Dish Detergent takes EVERYTHING out. Even blood. My dad swears by this. And trust me, it works. Just scrub into stain before washing.
Sudden face breakout (acne) and need to get rid of it fast? Put white toothpaste on it. It'll dry it out FAST.
Cracked, dry feet? Put Eucerin (is at Walmart) on at night and cover with socks. It works great! My heels get really dry in the winter and can crack. But this stuff heals it up in a night.
Made cookies? put a piece of bread in the container with them. The bread will keep the cookies from getting hard.
I have not tried these, but they were too interesting not to share:
*Keep apples and bananas from turning brown by placing them on a plate containing a small amount of a lemon-lime soft drink.
*Breast Milk KILLS existing, live Cancer cells!!
Swedish study done and now funded by the American Cancer Society. From what I've read (there's a ton about it), the scientific community is leery to publicize it yet. One of the reasons I read, being that they don't want the milk banks for Preemies to be depleted. But anyway...I thought the study was amazing and wanted to share.

You are funny. Thanks for the props.
Okay... I am sure I have a million..
If you have sinus infection squirt breastmilk in your nose.
If your baby has stuffy nose, squirt breastmilk in the nose and it will clear the sinuses.
Cranberry will cure a yeast infection. Take high potency cranberry pills , reduce all sugars in your diet and take acidophlus. This is gross.. but you can also put plain yogurt down there.
For heartburn eat Papaya. This is good when you are pregnant.
To get tile grout clean use a magic eraser. It works wonders...
I will think of more and come back.
Okay... one more...
BREASTMILK will heal about any scratch, scrape, cut.. anything. It has natural antibitoic in it. If your baby scratches her face with her little nails.. put some breastmilk on there and let it dry on it. The cut will disappear within a day. You can also use it on any cut or wound on your other kids. It will cut the healing time in half.
ANother one..
Olive oil works great for diaper rash. Clean the area with the olive oil on a piece of cotten or soft cloth. Then put some extra on the skin that is irritated.
I just read that putting vapor rub on your kiddos feet (or our feet for that matter) and then socks over it will take away even the worst of coughs in 5 minutes. I haven't tried this but will since we are no longer doing cough meds!! I'll let you know if it works! unless someone else already does ;0)
I am a well of natural-esque tidbits. I just can't think of any now. My mother is a 'healthnut' and all my bebe's were born at home. Yeah, we're weird.
Gripe Water was the magic cure for gas when Josiah was little and suffered from it. Mylicon did absolutely nothing, but Gripe Water would quiet him in an instant (perfect for when we were on an airplane from Israel to California and didn't exactly want all the other passengers to get angry at our screaming child and hoist us out of the plane somewhere over the Atlantic). :)
yes, I second the gripe water. And really, thats all I've got. I'm taking notes from everyone else though. :)
Well, I have my 2 cents for a stress reliever. The best advice I EVER got from a stranger (cause when you are pregnant and or have young children everyone feels compelled to give you advice) was this: When you are feeling overwhelmed, the dishes aren't done, the laundry isn't washed let alone folded, the kids are still in pj's, toys are everywhere... look at the ceiling. It's in order. It's clean. Everything is good on the ceiling. I know, it's strange, but some days it's a life saver.
So I'm sure this isn't the kinda thing you were asking for Christin, but it's all I've got. :)
Val- it IS what I'm hoping for. Any and all tips of brilliance to share.
So here's another one that I wasn't going to put on the main page. (not that people can't look on there, but still...)
The BEST advice I ever heard concerning marriage. Never fight with your clothes on. :)
It was from an old "granny" type to her granddaughter. She said that if you just start 'taking it off', the fight dissolves to laughter. ...And I'm sure other such things. :D
It's now a joke between my hub and me. He even asks me if I want to fight. hee hee (and yes, I do have his permission to say this) :D
So yeah. My tip concerning marriage. haha
Thanks for commenting! I visit your site daily! :)
Sorry about the party rejection. You know if we were here I'd be there with bells on!
Oh, what a fun [practical!] post!
Here's my only offer:
Alum for canker sores.
Or maybe that's common knowledge. But when you have a pesky canker sore in your mouth, get some Alum (it's a little-used spice but can be found at any store) on a Q-tip and put onto your canker sore. It tastes icky but your canker sore will be GONE within a day or two. And it won't hurt anymore!
~Stacy
Goodeness! I think I'll fire my natureopath and come visit your blg instead! Loved your marriage tip btw! Brilliant. ~Karlie
i tend to concentrate in the preventive side of the natural - eating all the "weird" stuff (according to my kids) like raw milk, free range beef/venison, organic veggies that we grow and freeze, freshly ground grains for our breads/pancakes etc, kefir with sprouts and coconut oil, ground flax seeds and brewers yeast, an exercise regimine etc...etc.... etc..etc....besides just the grace of God (and i do not say that glibly) and good genes, there has to be something in all of this in that i am 48 years old and have absolutely no health concerns.
but i do shave my legs and arm pits; i hate tofu but love coffee - my vice and i tend to vote republican - so i am not a total hippy from the 60's.........! *smile*
Hmmmm...this is amazing! I can't believe the breast milk stuff. I used to say that when Sean and I went away I wasn't going to "pump and dump" because breastmilk is "liquid gold" and maybe that was really true in more than one way. I can say that all of my children were breastfed(anywhere from 4 months with dd#3 to 14 months with the twins)and we are probably the healthiest family that I know. The doctor even comments on how rarely he sees us. Typically only for well baby visits and physicals. I actually don't know that he has even seen dd#3, because we switched doctors and she hasn't needed to go.
With that said our kids also eat fruits and veggies with no complaints. They love cooking and adding pureed veggies into something like mac and cheese. I have been blessed in this area!
Okay so I use antibiotics as needed but find there are lots of natural cures too... recently one of my articles suggests a teaspoon of warm honey to soothe sore throats and coughs at night is a great trick since childrens cough meds are being disapproved...
-- also a saltine cracker in your sugar jar to keep it from clumping up
-- and a few pieces of rice in your salt shaker to keep it from clumping up
-- and I have tried the piece of bread with cookies -- works like a charm
-I love reading your site I am always surprised by the variety of info...
Here's a smelly cure that works:
Ear Ache? Cut an onion in half, bake it, and apply it to your ear. Bu-bye ear ache. We did it all the time when I was a kid.
Hey just heard a new one today that I thought would be worth sharing!! The school I work at is having quite a Lice stir (I know very yucky) but one of the ladies was telling me that when she went to the health food store the owner suggested Rosemary. Just spray it all over and Lice do not like the smell of it so they stay away! Its worth a try anyway, even if you homeschool its been going around just from going to the movies lately. :0(
