...Imagine what He can Do for Your Finances. This little saying has been on my fridge for years. Encouraging me. Driving me to my knees. Causing me to question the timing and compassion of God in our lives.
Yes, you read that right. I'm just keeping it real here.
So how are we planning on accomplishing this large financial goal of paying off our mortgage (briefly eluded to in an earlier post), you ask???!! A lot of faith in a Creator who has unlimited resources and being wise stewards of what He's already entrusted to us.
Because honestly, I look at our finances and I think, "There's no way." But thankfully, I serve a Bigger God...who happens to own The Way.
Allow me to give you some background:
After the Lord ASKED me to stop working, our income was nearly cut in half. It was a shock to our system. We'd never had money issues. We never had debt. In fact, when we got married, we had three cars, a college degree, and a good amount of other things (enough to fill a house)between us...all debt free. And then, God spoke... He asked us to go to one income. So we did. Ouch.
At that point, I was getting ready to enter a Masters Degree Program. But then *surprise* Baby on the way.
And then God spoke again. He asked us to move to Texas. Just up and move. NOW. Trusting Him for everything. And so we did. OUUUUCCCCCHHHHH. We've never been so stressed or stretched thin in EVERY area of our lives. Finances included. In fact, it'd be a gross understatement to say our money was "tight". Because there were times we were hardly able to pay bills. ...of course the fact that the IRS accidentally took a hefty sum of money from our savings without our knowledge didn't help. *groan*
Why am I sharing this? Especially since the retelling of it still borders on making me sick to my stomach. Because in order to tell a miracle story...though I feel as if I'm still in the midst of it's unfolding... you have to have a NEED first. Period. So, I share from our Season of Need.
Do I realize that my sharing this may bring judgement on us? Yep. People are always willing to throw their oh-so-insightful judgement around concerning other's lives. But I cannot live life under that shadow. For it cripples.
But I can say that in the midst of it all, I've never known more intimately that we were RIGHT where God wanted us to be. Once He clearly spoke to me and said: "I can wipe out debt in a matter of minutes. But you cannot get what I am teaching you here through any other means."
Now don't get me wrong. It was hard. Harder than hard. And I'm someone who even likes a "challenge". But to give you an insiders point of view of my lowest point dering this "Need"....I called up my mom once, sobbing, and said, "Does He have no compassion!? We left everything to follow Him and we're dying out here! We're dying!"
This was no easy road. But it was a road chosen by God for us. For His purposes, which are STILL unfolding to this day. (There's SO much more to this story, but it'll have to wait for now)
Fast forward a few years. We moved back to our home state with over $60,000 of debt. Debt incurred, not through shopping sprees, but through fixing up a house that we bought (that happened to have rotting foundations. *surprise*) and living expenses. Like food and heat.
All of it (with exception of some we owe my parents) has been payed off. God demolished it. In record time. With money that we did not have. Because he's faithful to His Word. He told me that he could wipe out the debt that he was allowing during that time...and He did.
And so...on that note, last year, the Lord challenged me to believe Him for the paying off of our mortgage (and parents) in the next X-number of years. And as of THIS year, I have an excitement and a desire to see that happen. Not because we are wealthy. We are not. But because we have a challenge from the Lord to believe Him for it.
SO! These are some ways that we'll walk towards elimination of house debt...since some of you asked:
-We don't normally buy new. I love the GoodWill and have actually found new things there. If I am ever tempted, all I have to do is revisit my attic in my mind. Thinking of all the stuff I "had to have" that now sits unused makes me ill. Especially when I think that I'd only get pennies on the dollar for it at my yardsales.
-We don't use credit cards. I don't like to pretend we have money we don't. So we buy with cash.
-We rent books and movies from our library. I love having books for my girls. But oddly enough, I've found that they actually like books better if they aren't the ones we own. So all those books on their shelves aren't as treasured as the "new" ones we check out from the local library.
-As of this year, the girls are only going to get special things at Christmas and their b'days...instead of immediately giving them the bargains that I find at yardsales. No more. In fact, I can't imagine that they actually need anything else.
-Jet's older sister blesses us with hand-me-downs from her daughter. Who happens to be 9 months younger than Charis, but larger. Thank you, Justina! :)
-Grocery-wise, we don't buy sugary foods or sodas. But one of the things I want to do is start cooking for a month and freezing it. That way we're not buying unnecessary foods...or doing impulse buying at the last minute, which I think is our downfall.
-We don't take expensive trips. I'd LOVE to travel, but at this point it our lives it doesn't make sense. So we are putting off that desire to pay down/off remaining debt. But there are ALL sorts of free places to visit!
-If I haven't used it in the last year, it leaves my house. Thus, the yearly yardsales. I find the more we have, the less we enjoy it. So...we chuck the unused. Last year, I bought a much-needed new door with my yardsale money (we own a fixer upper). I went through the house picking up random items saying "Which do I want more? This or a new door?" And from that "test" I got my yardsale stuff. :)
-I PLAN on (we'll see if we can make it happen this year) having a veggie garden in my backyard. I love vegetables, but they are SO expensive. So...grow them myself. Freeze the left overs. And voila! Save money.
-We don't have TV. I mean, we have one and a DVD/VCR. But it doesn't get channels and we refuse to pay for cable. It's trash anyway.
-We're getting a hefty tax refund this year. It's all going towards our second mortgage.
I know there's more. But that's some of it. We've looked through our spending before but couldn't find "fluff." Unless you consider a cell phone with the least amount of minutes on a family plan to be fluff. As a mom of three, I do not. If something were to happen while I was driving my girls around, I'd want to not be at the mercy of a stranger to stop. But that's just me.
BUT somehow I know we can do more. I'm determined to find ways to save more than we are now; I just have to get really creative. So if YOU do something as a family, we'd love to hear it.

I have been so into yard sale mode lately! I'm ready for nice weather so I can flood my yard with all of my unwanted things.
We have made the decision this year too that the kids need to get less. We shop at re-uzit shops, yard sales, toy stores... and the kids get things. Not necessarily expensive things - but things. We would like to hide those "good finds" for Christmas gifts instead of "It's Tuesday" gifts. :) Thats going to be a challenge for me, my love language is gifts. I'll need to get creative there. A recent walk through my basement sent my head spinning at all of the "stuff" we have. So ready to de-clutter - and make $$!
Have fun preparing for your yard sale(s). So excited to hear how the Lord pays off your house.
Tremendous testimony! I think it brings out the creativity in people to live un-American (you know what I mean...that see it, buy it now mentality). Cool stuff, friend.
Sell a kidney? ok - just kidding. You got the cash thing right: if it isn't paid for and saved for in cash, it ain't gonna happen - and you know our story. :) It really saddens me how many people really don't have a clue about debt - or living on a budget period. Remind me to tell you about someone that I met with last night to go over her monthly budget.
Jolanthe- actually I don't really know your story. :) And really, I don't want to know about anyone else's faux pas in the budgeting dept. I just want to focus on getting my rear (and all its faux pas) in gear this year.
Some of the things you said, I can totally identify with. I just borrowed the "Money Matters" program by Larry Burkett to put on my computer. We're not in TERRIBLE shape financially, but I just need a better way to record things and actually keep tabs on what and where exactly my money is going. The only debt we have is our home mortgage (my husband built it and saved us a load of $$) and our new car that we just purchase this past spring/summer. I just started reading "The Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey and after reading what he says, it makes me wanna kick myself for ever buying a new car! So, that's our current goal: paying off the car!
I'm curious how you paid down that $60,000 debt in record time. Were you just doing the same things you are doing now and apply all the extra cash towards it?
I LOVE garage sales too! My subdivision hosts two garage sales each year and whoever wants to participate just opens up their garage doors. A gazillion people come (I may be exaggerating a little...), but we made a ton last year!
I also LOVE hand-me-downs. Thankfully we have older cousins, both boys and girls that fully supply both my kids with an exploding closet! Such a blessing!
And I agree about the cell phone. I don't see it as an option either. I view it as a security issue. We only have cell phones though. We don't have a land line at all and haven't for years now.
Sorry, I wrote a mini book...
This was a FANTASTIC post. Yes, we always DO seem to be on the same page spiritually! Hmm, tips from me? I've gotta tell ya, frugality DOES NOT come naturally to me, but God has been convicting me in a BIG way that he wants that of me. It is so difficult!
Have you checked out my friend Grace for Gayle yet? Her link is on my blog, and she has a 2nd blog that is all about saving $$ at the grocery store. It's awesome! I know first hand she IS the frugal queen, so go get some tips from her.
Oh, and I second Stephanie's comment "I'm curious how you paid down that $60,000 debt in record time". We have nearly $40,000 in car/truck debt I'd like to get rid of in record time! Do share!!!! ~Karlie
You go with your bad self! Whoo hoo!
I still have three editions of "The Tightwad Gazette" on my shelf should you ever want them.
(although I'm sure there's more on the internet nowadays)
And we garden and preserve/can. My testimony is that I lived it as the child , and survived! I wonder sometimes how children of families now will survive as adults should they not be as well off as they are today. Will they feel deprived/depressed if they cannot go out to dinner a couple of times a week?
So, I try to walk the line Now I am learning to let go of some things and be more generous- I want to be frugal, but not obsessed!!
Check out Amy Daczycyn's "The Tightwad Gazette". It rocks! We went from 2 FT jobs to 1 Full-time, had a baby and paid off 15,000 with those simple (but radical) ideas.
It's encouraging to read about someone else living the non-consumer lifestyle.
Amy
You sound like us! (Except for we do use one credit card; we just pay it off every month, and deduct it as we spend it from our checking account.)
The only debt we currently have is our mortgage payment. And I am ITCHING to get that paid off, oh my. We already pay down on the principle every month in addition to the mortgage payment, but this is one of our goals, too. That 30-year loan (that we're only 8 years into) kills me!
A couple of things we do (or do not do)...
-Yes on the veggie garden. YOU CAN DO IT, Christin!
-No subscriptions whatsoever. We don't even get the newspaper.
-I cut everyone's hair.
-We rarely eat out.
-HUGE fan of the library, too. I have saved so much money I used to plunk down on books (which was always a justifiable purchase, in my brain) by simply checking them out at the library!
-Long distance pre-paid phone cards.
I KNOW where I need to cut back on spending: in our grocery budget. It's those Costco trips. And all the "quick runs" to the grocery store to get one (which ends up being 7) things...
~Stacy
I haven't stopped by for a while, but when I did (just now) I found a great post. And one that I can definitely connect with -- we are struggling with our budget and getting out of debt too. I love going to a website called Frugal Village to get inspiration and support from others in the same situation. You might like it... www.frugalvillage.com. Keep fighting the good fight!
What an awesome testimony to the Lord. Your obedience is evident through out your journey, how cool.
Isn't amazing how much we think we "need".
You sound like your doing a great job being stewards of your finances.
I am having a hard time keeping up with blog reading this week and you keep adding new (semi-long) posts...fast! I will hopefully settle into a routine soon and will have to play "catch-up".
Good for you. I get in moods like this. I love Dave Ramsey. In less than one year we paid off $7,000 worth of debt. We cut up all credit cards. Still not sure how we did it. We were determined. (I don't worry about our house too much because we hardly owe anything on it (a HUGE blessing!). Tax returns help A LOT!
Sometimes I look at the other teachers in the school and wonder how they afford to drive new cars and take great vacations...then I thought about it once and realized that all of them are either single or both spouses work! We make pleanty to live. Just not a lot of big extras...a sacrifice I would make any day to do what I do.
...and I can't even tell you how long this took me to write due to the fact that kids are being very needy.
this is very encouraging
we too AS OF THIS YEAR are getting $$ in order and paying down debt. the Lord has been so gracious in helping us already....a big thing for us is keeping the budget in front of us regularly and talking about money regularly (like a few times a week)......where before we'd talk about it like 1x/month....and we are doing a lot of the same things you are...and giving home-made cards instead of gifts sometimes (when the gifts aren't really necessary)....
It's so exciting to see how many people are on board here. My husband, well he's just the best! We are both financially educated and work in the field... our only debt is our mortgage. He is just so good at money matters--- we too have started hitting that principal HARD! He is a man of spreadsheets- and we are now on track to save $60,000+ in INTEREST alone on this mortgage! AND...if the feds keep lowering those rate, it may just be time to refi. to a 15 year and make the payoff of closing costs in 2 years time- now that is a great deal!
Things we do to $ave- we DO use a credit card that gives us 5% back on every purchase! That means instead of $3.00/gallon of gas we spend $2.85/gallon. That means when I spend $100 on groceies it only costs me $95... over time that adds up! (And YES of course we pay it off completely each month!) :)
-We really don't eat out very often- my husband prefers to eat at home anyways (i guess that's good- he must like my cooking)
-Our thermostat is set at 66- and you wear clothes (me lots of them) around the house
-Oh- we so consolidate errands when we go out- he is like the mastermind of road trip planning - no unnecessary trips!
-We shop at Sharp Shopper! Got to love that place
-I can veggies - thanks to pyrotechny's mother! hehehe- love it when she plants so much she doesn't know what to do w/ it and graciously gives me so so much!
-We use lots of investment opportunities for tax deductions to reduce our AGI (espicially since our first child decduction doesn't come until 2008)
-Maybe we should all write a book about this- and since this one looks like it's starting to turn into one- i'll stop now!
Thanks for the post!
oh yay..someone else in this area not consumed with new things and new books and new this and that.....:o)
i often tell people that if they "saw" what we made (bc i quit 12 yrs ago when i was the major bread winner) they would laugh that not only are we making it but we are able to save and pay for everything (cars - used of course etc) in cash.....its a testimony simply to say "i dont know how but i know WHO"..............AND to sound financial advice passed on by my depression era dad who knows how to save.....
not making it about me...just truly "walking" through your post and saying YES YES YES....someone going AGAINST the grain of bigger and newer is better and living according to kingdom principles.....you GO girl!!!!
oh and the "story" of wondering if GOD has any compassion? whew...been there on many fronts...i hear ya..but i am learning that its in the wilderness and dry spells HE moves best...DARN DARN DARN to my need to know and be comfortable and be in control soul....:o)
Rock on girl!
go watch storyofstuff.com - not sure it is all "true" politically, but the point it makes is a good one to think about.
We do most of what you listed, but still seem to "get by". The last year has really changed things so that we can give me. We did the same thing with yard sales - save it for bdays and holidays - they don't need "new". Might as well emphasize that now :)
We do the credit card, but are disciplined enough to pay it off monthly. We get 5% back and love it. One year, I filled out every application that sent me $50 or $100 for using it. I would use it one time, pay it off, get my check and close the card. I made $450 that year, but it takes a lot of discipline and record keeping.
Anyway - kid on my lap. more later.
You rock!
what an inspiration you are!
saving $$$ is a BIG weakness of mine. i try,really, i do...
groceries are our biggest expenditure.
"I can wipe out debt in a matter of minutes. But you cannot get what I am teaching you here through any other means."
oh how true! thank you for sharing this post. i read it to my dh as we are going thru a very similiar situation. but i am encouraged by remembering that the Lord has a plan and purpose in the hard times we are going thru.
love your list of things you do to be frugal. i'm working on mine.
blessings, gail
Yep yep yep, really liked this one. We have been reviewing and praying ourselves, it just seems like there is sooooo much for us to pay off, but I am inspired by your testimony and know the Lord will be there right along with us! Thanks! :0)
Hi Christin;
I'd like to point you in the direction of a wonderful book (besides the bible and Malachi 3)-loved your sharing.
Robert Morris did a seminar on finances that my church did in the month of December...it was very moving and filled with wisdom. My Knight bought the book (see next paragraph) for me for Christmas-good stuff!
It is called 'The Blessed Life' by Robert Morris...life changing challenging stuff, but so filled with blessing and fullness from God's hand.
check it out!
